5 Swimming Safety Tips for Pets

As summer temperatures heat up, you and your furry pal likely want to cool off with a swim.
Although it’s in their name, not all dogs–or pets–know how to “doggy paddle,” so take proper
precautions when you swim with your four-legged friend. Here are five tips to help your pet stay
safe while swimming.

#1: Provide fresh water to drink
If your thirsty pet enters the pool or another body of water, they are more likely to lap up
chemical-laden or contaminated water. Always offer plenty of fresh water to quench your pet’s
thirst before and after swimming.

#2: Ensure your pet wears a life vest
If your pet is going to be in deep water, ensure they wear a life vest rather than relying solely on
their swimming skills to keep them afloat. Try on the vest before heading into the water, so your
pet has time to become acclimated to the gear.

#3: Never leave your pet unattended in water
Pets can panic when left alone in water, so always keep a watchful eye on your furry pal when
they are swimming.

#4: Show your pet how to get out of the pool
If your pet falls into your pool when you are not around, they may not be able to get out
without assistance. Ensure you have a stable set of stairs that your pet can use to climb out of
the pool, and ensure they know how to use the stairs.

#5: Rinse off your pet after a swim
Chemicals, pathogens, and general dirt and debris can work its way into your pet’s thick fur
after a dip in a pool or lake. Thoroughly rinse your pet’s fur after they swim to prevent them
from grooming these contaminants off their body.
